Dr. Lauren Schaefer is a psychology postdoctoral intern. She obtained her B.A. and M.A. degrees in Psychology from The University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She completed her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with a focus on Child, Adolescent, and Family Studies at The University of Memphis. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Medical College of Georgia-Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center with an emphasis on Child and Family Studies in Augusta, Georgia. Dr. Lauren chose to work within an Academic Medical Center for her pre-doctoral internship in pursuit of her desire to master multiple treatment modalities and be a well-rounded clinician who is equipped to work with clients in all age groups.

Dr. Lauren takes a client-centered, eclectic, and strengths-based approach with her clients. She works from a place of empathy, compassion, and non-judgment to develop a therapeutic relationship with her clients that fosters trust, safety, understanding, validation, and hope. Prominent themes in Dr. Lauren’s therapeutic work are helping clients build self-compassion, self-acceptance, self-awareness, flexible thinking, and improved interpersonal relationships. In being client-centered, Dr. Lauren prioritizes identifying client treatment goals and discussing the varied applicable evidence-based treatment options. Through this discussion and collaboration, her clients are able to target their goals in a manner that fits their values and style. As Dr. Lauren believes therapy is a fluid, collaborative process that can be modified over time, she regularly seeks client feedback throughout treatment to ensure optimal progress.

Dr. Lauren has extensive training and experience in conducting individual, group, and family therapy with clients of all ages who are experiencing a wide variety of presenting concerns including Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive, Feeding, and Eating, Depressive, and Trauma- and Stressor-related Disorders. She is trained and experienced in delivering current evidence-based treatment modalities across the lifespan, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness, Parent-Management Training, Person-Centered Therapy, and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Dr. Lauren also has training within psychological assessments which include diagnostic clarification, child development, adaptive functioning, achievement, and intellectual functioning. She enjoys working collaboratively with professionals in other disciplines, including teachers, psychiatrists, and primary care physicians to enhance patient care.

Dr. Lauren was born and raised in Wilmington, NC, and is thrilled to be back in NC after her training in TN and GA. She is looking forward to spending more time with her family, who are local, as well as exploring the Triangle region.
