Dr. Joanna Schechner earned her master’s and doctorate degrees in Psychology from the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida. She completed her internship at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri and her residency at a community mental health clinic in Melbourne. Dr. Schechner is licensed as a Psychologist in the state of North Carolina. Her undergraduate degree in Psychology is from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. Though she grew up in Tallahassee, she is originally from Poland and speaks Polish fluently.
Dr. Schechner has extensive experience in psychological assessment and substance abuse assessments as well as working with adolescents and adults in individual and group therapy. Dr. Schechner enjoys working with severe mental illness, substance abuse, eating disorders and obesity. She also has experience working with anxiety and depressive disorders, PTSD and trauma and personality disorders. Furthermore, she has experience working with suicidal ideation and self harm and is experienced in crisis intervention.
Dr. Schechner implements a number of therapeutic techniques in therapy that are based on the patient’s needs. Treatment modalities include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, motivational interviewing as well as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
Dr. Schechner is a professional member of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the North Carolina Psychological Association (NCPA).
